2001 Audubon Quartet performance of first movement of Mendelssohn’s Quartet in F minor, Op. 80
The Audubon Quartet was in existence almost four decades, achieving world-wide recognition as a major chamber music ensemble and amassing an impressive list of “firsts” for an American string quartet.
1977 – first American string quartet to compete and win top prizes in international string quartet competition, resulting in President Jimmy Carter inviting the Quartet to perform at the White House. Another top competition prize was garnered in 1979, creating opportunities to represent the United States abroad.
1979 – the first American string quartet to be featured on the nationally televised show “CBS Sunday Morning”
1981 – first American string quartet to receive an invitation from the Chinese Ministry of Culture to perform on the mainland, following the 1979 normalization of relations between the US and China.
For nearly four decades, the Audubon Quartet performed around the world, with concerts in Asia, Canada, Caribbean, Europe, Mexico, Middle East, North and South America. They are credited with more than a dozen commercial CD recordings and numerous national live radio broadcast appearances.
Summer festival concerts include 35 years at Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania and 25 years at the Chautauqua Institution in New York.
Their legacy as performers and teachers includes residencies at Marywood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania (1974-1979), Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia (1979-2001) and Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia (2007-2011); an annual String Quartet Seminar for held at VA Tech (1995-2004); and generations of aspiring professional instrumentalists.
